Assalamualaikum. When using the Serial Monitor on the Arduino IDE, there are several types of line-ending serial for the Arduino serial monitor that we can use, namely No line ending, New Line, Carriage Return, and Both NL & CR.

These options are also known as Control Characters.

When you test these options one by one, the display data received by the Serial Monitor will differ from one option to another.

Then what are the different types of Arduino Serial Monitor shipments and what does it mean? Here’s a brief explanation.

No Line Ending

The No line ending option means that the data sent is according to the data entered.

New Line (NL)

The New Line option will insert an ASCII code “\n” at the end of the data when sent.

Carriage Return (CR)

The Carriage Return option will insert an ASCII code “\r” at the end of the data when it is sent.

Both NL & CR

NL (New Line) & CR (Carriage Return) will insert the code “\n\r” at the end of the data when sent.
