GSM full form is a complete form which means Global System for Mobile Communication. We all must have been very close to the use of communication devices that use cellular networks.

These communication devices use a digital cellular network that is familiarly known as GSM. Then, what is GSM, its definition, history, and its advantages and disadvantages, will be discussed in the following.

What Is GSM All About?

GSM is the Global System for Mobile Communications. It is the standard cellular network used by all communication device users in the world. It is a digital cellular network technology with more than 80% of mobile networks using it. No wonder, GSM has become the most extensively utilized cellular network technology worldwide.

It was developed by ETSI or the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to act as a replacement for 1G mobile networks while also describing protocols for 2G networks. Before GSM was developed, there was CDMA which means Code Division Multiple Access.

However, CDMA has the disadvantage of not being able to support data computing and calls simultaneously. Then, GSM was developed which could not only be used for voice calls, but text messages and data computing simultaneously.

A variation of TDMA or time division multiple access which is the most widely used technology among the three digital telephony technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA) is used in GSM by compressing and digitizing data, then sending it in two data streams to the other user’s data channel which each has its own time slot. GSM operates on a frequency of 1800 or 900 MHz (megahertz).

GSM is the evolution of mobile wireless telecommunications technology which includes GPRS (General Packet Radio Service, HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data), UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service), and EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment) along with other technologies.

GSM Development History

GSM full form, which means Global System for Mobile Communications is used as a digital cellular telecommunications standard on the basis of increasingly dynamic societal developments and overcoming the limitations of analog communication technology, an organization was then formed with the aim of setting cellular communication standards by European countries.

This organization was the beginning of the development of digital cellular technology known as the Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM. Then the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) made GSM a cellular telecommunication standard, then commercial operations began in the last quarter of 1992.

GSM usage then expanded to Asia and America, until at the end of 2005, GSM subscribers in the world had reached 1.5 billion subscribers. Eventually GSM grew and developed as the most widely used mobile telecommunication system worldwide.

Advantages Of GSM (Global System For Mobile Communications)

The advantages of using a GSM cellular network include:

  1. Extensive network deployment even to remote areas
  2. Free from roaming
  3. Prices are relatively cheap for consumer
  4. Compatibility with various devices

Disadvantages of GSM (Global System for Communications)

Besides having advantages, GSM also has disadvantages, such as:

  1. Less data security
  2. There are frequent breakdowns in communication
